Why Dayspring Farm Soap Rather Than Dove?

Why Dayspring Farm Soap Rather Than Dove?

Recently a friend asked the very reasonable question, "Why should I buy your soap instead of Dove or something I buy at the supermarket?" As a former Dove bar and bodywash user I sympathize. Grocery store bars are less expensive and more convenient to buy - just pick them up when you get your bananas. And that stuff smells great!

Here's why we chose to stop buying commercially produced soap (it's the same reason we cook from scratch and try to use whole ingredients in just about all we do): the Dove ingredient list.

Dove bar soap contains: Stearic acid, Tetrasodium EDTA, 2,6-Di-t-butyl-p-cresol (BHT), Sodium stearate, Trisodium etidronate, Sodium chloride, Water, Sodium tallowate, Titanium dioxide, Sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate, Coconut fatty acids, Sodium cocoate, Sodium cocoyl isethionate, Cocoamidopropylbetaine, Sodium palm kernelate, Sodium alkylbenzenesulfonate.

Are we leery of chemicals? No! We are big fans of chemistry - it's fascinating how adding an alkali like sodium hydroxide (lye) to fats turns them into an entire different molecule that now has cleansing properties as well as conditioning ones. But we are choosy about which chemicals we put on our skin, especially since we have kids with sensitive skin. Our preference too is for fewer ingredients. Ever spent way too much time trying to figure out which thing in a soap or lotion is making your skin angry? We have.

It's more than what we are choosing NOT to use (ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate, with documented research showing harmful properties). The soap we use and sell is full of ingredients that, far from harming the skin, nourish it. Check out our post Soap Ingredient All Stars for more information about our ingredients and why we chose them. Our soap is not just free of harmful substances and healthy for your skin. It's a pleasure to use because it's handmade with intentionally chosen ingredients worthy of the bodies we were gifted at our creation. Treat that gift right!
